R&M Racing / Race Bodies
The R&M fiberglass research and development department has been testing the use of a custom composite body for dirt late model race cars. What started as a family and company hobby has become much more since we have decided to release our bodies to the public for purchase. We have hit our fair share of speed bumps along the way but the end result speaks for itself.
R&M race bodies are nearly indestructible and are very light weight. The typical race body is built from aluminum. The problem with aluminum is that it is a fairly heavy material with no flex. When there is in a “bump and rub” scenario that is an everyday think in the racing world the aluminum will bend and hold its mangled shape. This is usually beaten back out and tends to look like a sack of potatoes after a rough race. R&M’s composite bodies are composed of 60 percent flex additive. This means that after they take a hit, they return to their original position. The bodies also consist of a Kevlar and polyester unidirectional fabric weave, which is what gives them their strength characteristics (stronger than steel).
In our testing procedure we put the body through some of the hardest hits any racer can expect. The result is nothing more than a scratch that is easily polished out by hand. Of course every material has its breaking point and we cannot call these panels fully indestructible but they are close. Baring an extreme damage hit we estimate that our bodies should last up to 10 times longer than its aluminum counterpart. There is also a considerable weight savings when comparing our composite bodies to aluminum. Throughout the research period, the body has sparked a lot of interest at every track we go to because it truly looks like nothing else on the track. It tends to be a “track favorite” and draws a crowd wherever it goes. This is also a large interest for sponsors, because it truly stands out from the competition and draws so much attention.
Our test body is designed after a late model mustang. Each panel of this body under-laps for a seamless and very clean look. We anticipate going into design and production on a Camaro body within the year. The body can be sold as an entire kit as well as individual pieces. There is more cost involved in building a composite body like this but over time you will actually save money. This is because you will rarely need replacement panels. Feel free to contact us if you would like the benefits of a long lasting, lightweight, beautiful car body that will make you stand out and attract sponsors wherever you go.
